Clean up in 6 easy steps

I know there are so many great articles about this already, but I wanted to show you how I do my cleanup anyway. I get so many questions about how I paint my nails, I always end up searching for articles to refer to. I figured it would be nice to have a reference of my own! There isn't much to it really, so I'll try to keep this post short and simple. Well, here goes..

Nail polish clean up
A blog about nail polishSo, you painted your nails in the best way you possibly could and everything went pretty wel. But it still doesn't look perfect. Yet!

You can leave it like this, or if you're a perfectionist freak like me, you'll try to fix this. There are several methods to smoothen out the cuticle line, like using corrector pens or q-tips drowned in nail polish remover.

Experience has taught me that the method I'm about to show you works best for me! It's really simple, quick and you'll only need two products.
A blog about nail polishFirst thing you'll need is a brush. It's really up to you what kind of you brush you'll use, but using a medium, not too stiff brush is something I would recommend. You might have to try different kinds to figure out what works best for you.

Found the perfect brush? You might want to consider getting backups. The brush will show signs of wear and tear after a while, so you'll need to replace it eventually.

The brush I'm using is a paint brush, so it doesn't have to be a fancy make up brush at all!

A blog about nail polishWhat you'll also need is something to remove nail polish with. Pure acetone is hands down the easiest and fastest solution! However, normal nail polish remover will work too.

Recently I switched back to using nail polish remover, since pure acetone can be very drying. It made my hands look super wrinkly.

I wish I was an expert on this topic, but you might want to look up the negative side effects Acetone can have, before you decide to use it.
A blog about nail polishOk, let's do this! Take your brush and dip it in the Acetone. Make sure you don't have too much on your brush by dapping it on a cotton pad first. If there's too much Acetone the polish will flow into the edges of your cuticles and we really don't want that to happen.
Now, place the brush next to the nail polish line you want to neaten. Sweep your brush lightly, without applying any pressure (Geez I feel like Bob Ross now). You'll only have to take away a slither. Dap your brush on your cotton pad every now and then, because the nail polish will build up in it. You can also use your brush to get rid of any nail polish that has landed on your skin.

A blog about nail polishTadaaa: a pretty smooth line near the cuticle. And it wasn't that difficult at all. It usually takes me about 5 minutes to do clean up, but I always try to apply my nail polish as neat as possible. If your application is a bit messy, clean up will take longer.

There are some things to pay attention to though. Some colors just won't allow you to use clean up. I find that blues, reds and vampies are difficult colors as they tend to flood your cuticles, especially if they're jellies!

Also, you don't want to use clean up on wet nails, I normally wait a good ten minutes before I start.
A blog about nail polishWhen everything is done, it's time for some rehydration!

Cuticles really despise Acetone so it's necessary to use a moisturizer on them, every time after they've been exposed to this hazardous stuff.

Until recently I used different kinds of cuticle oils and balms, but I think I may have found my Holy Grail cuticle treatment: Lemony Flutter by Lush. Rubbing this lovely lemon scented butter into your cuticles will really help them remain soft and hydrated.

The nail polish I'm wearing in these photos is Feeling Blue by Models Own.

This was it for today, I hope you find this helpful! Take care and till next time, xo.

Try Orlay Bonder for your base coat. My manicurist turned me on to it. Your manicure should last two weeks!
Orly or Orlay????........thanks!

I am an at home DIY, mainly because I believe I care so much more about my nails than someone else does. (I've had some horrendous experiences.) I am about to buy the necessities for soak-off gel polish. I've just about decided that Gelish is the brand to go with, but absolutely l-o-v-e CND's (colour) Tropix. Q: Can I use Gelish Base & Top Coat with a CND colour?
Hi, do you mind if I use the link to this on my blog? It is such useful info :)

do you do the clean up when your nails are still wet or do you wait for them to completely dry?

Poor bees.
Perfection! Whats the name of that paint brush you are using?

Super handig artikel, zelf laatst in de aanbieding maybelline nagellakremover http://www.onlinemakeup.nl/maybelline-express-rem... gekocht. Ben er zelf zeer over te spreken, misschien een goede tip voor jullie?
LOL, love the Bob Ross reference. And I'm sure he'd appreciate the patience and spirit you put into cleaning up your nails =]
I just did my first DIY gel kit last week. Won't start another application before purchasing a brush for cleanup! What a mess I had on that cuticle stick...Cured polish on my big toe...Thank you for saving me for next time.
Another thing that works is when you've been in the shower for a few minutes and your hands have been wet awhile, you can start taking some of the polish off that has gotten onto your skin. I've done this a few times when I've run out of nail polish remover and it works great, just don't do it right when you get in the shower, make sure your nails and skin have had time to get hydrated. (I tend to be messy on the sides of my nails since I want all of my nail to be covered).
Wat een goede tip! Ga ik zeker eens proberen aangezien ik géén expert ben op het gebied van netjes lakken, hihi!
can you write up a article on how to cut cuticles???? I been practicing for a really long time and its not how much i practice but how i practice. I feel as though i dont know what im cutting and im having difficulty holding and placing the cuticle cutter right
Thank you for posting this, very helpful to us new bloggers or nail artist's
Acetone is bad for you. It's likely to contain fomaldehyde in it as well

I would avoid acetone

Acetone will certainly dry your skin out, and you want to always use it in a well-ventilated space (it can make you dizzy, nauseated, and give you a headache if you inhale too much of it), but it's not anywhere near as harmful as random people on the internet like to claim. In fact, acetone is a natural by-product of normal mammal biology, meaning, your own body (and that of any pet mammals you might have hanging around) produces it (and excretes it, so it's not like acetone exposure is permanent or builds up in your body). It IS good to be cautious with it, but there are far more dangerous household chemicals. Be careful with acetone, but you don't have to be afraid of it. ;)
Great steps. Lemony flutter is fab - I love Burt's bees lemon salve as well. A little sticky, but it smells nice and works! I just rub a little on whenever I am watching tv or something. Your tutorial on basic polish application was great as well. Only question, do you wrap your tips??
You had me at the Bob Ross reference! Thanks for the great tip(s)!
Ah, I actually figured this out at a friend's house because her mom likes polish and had both a small brush like this one and a little glass cup to dip it in. My problem, once I purchased both on my own to attempt it, is that the brush seems to collect all the polish and become glooped up. It gets dirty and doesn't do what it should, and then no matter how much I try to clean it, the polish stays in the bristles and when it dries...well, it's pretty much one large, hard bristle now. :/

How do you keep the brush supple and clean?
1 reply · active 627 weeks ago
I'm not sure! Do you use a synthetic brush? Maybe it doesn't react that well to acetone or nail polish remover. You could try using a brush with different bristles?
thank u great article easy as cheers cheers cheers
Its tough to have such beautiful nails. But these tips are very helpful for cleaning up.
Quick question about the Lemony Flutter by Lush, do you think it would help give strength to peeling nails? My nails suffer on account of my medical conditions and I like to keep them covered with polish but it comes off as my nails peel. It drives me insane and the last cuitical oil I used didn't do anything for my nails.
this has helped me a lot now I cab paint my nails and there not be lots of space underneath. 10/10:)
